LE GRAND BORNAND
Where is it?
In the Haute Savoie district of the Alps, just 31 miles from
Geneva.
|
The Skiing:
The immediate are boasts 65km of pistes and 41 lifts, but shares the
Aravis ski area with neighbouring La Clusaz, which more than trebles
the available piste distance. Friends of your reporter particularly
enjoyed skiing the Maroly and La Duche. There are good black runs,
such as Vraille, and a seriously steep speed skiing slope. Advanced
skiers will enjoy the off-piste areas. Extensive range of
interesting slopes for beginners and intermediates.
Apres Ski:
Restaurants are plentiful and good food can be enjoyed at reasonable
prices. Members of our group had different favourites, among these
were Au Bon Vieux Temps and Le Bournerie. For a good drink try La
Floria and Petit Pierre, which has an excellent atmosphere and
drinks at affordable prices. Party animals can bop the night away at
Le Baron Noire - the resort's only nightspot. Visit it if you must…
Resort:
Scenic mountain village that has retained much of its original
character. Enjoy lunch at one of the many attractive mountain
restaurants. The Telemark restaurant is recommended, as is the Chez
Arthur at Cret du Merle, which has a lovely table service restaurant
tucked in behind the self-service side.
Who won't like it:
Extreme skiers looking for thrill-a-minute black runs and acute
couloirs. Stop outs - there's nothing that trendy to stop out for.
Who will like it:
Visitors who enjoy a traditional skiing experience in an environment
unspoiled by rampant commercialism and lunch in a rustic restaurant.
